The Drug Discovery Division of Southern Research in Birmingham, Alabama, is substantially expanding its Neuroscience Department, with a specific interest in recruiting neuroscientists with expertise in neurodegeneration and repair. Positions are equivalent in rank to an academic Associate or Full Professor, depending on experience, with substantial salary coverage. In contrast to traditional academic environments wherein the Principal Investigator's time is split between research, teaching and administrative responsibilities, Southern Research offers the unique opportunity for the Principal Investigator to engage exclusively in research and professional development activities. Southern Research is particularly interested in applicants with ongoing, funded research programs focused on cross-cutting themes in cellular neuropathology, such as autophagy, mitochondrial function, protein processing and clearance, and neuronal excitability. Applicants with expertise in cell and animal models of neurodegeneration and/or biomarker development, especially those utilizing approaches amenable to translational development, are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Division has a long-standing record of continuous funding by the National Institutes of Health and other federal organizations, foundations and private enterprises. The environment offers opportunities to collaborate with expert teams engaged with CNS investigations, oncology and infectious disease projects, high throughput screening, medicinal chemistry, in vitro and in vivo pharmacology, preclinical in vivo pharmacokinetic assessments, and clinical trials. Additionally, the Drug Development Division offers facile scientific opportunities that enable translational in vivo evaluations and also investigations of CNS devices and related bioengineering technologies.
Southern Research is a not-for-profit research organization that is academically affiliated with and adjacent to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The UAB Medical Center, affiliated research centers, and campus departments afford opportunities for basic science and clinical collaborations, as well as joint appointments in UAB departments. Importantly, UAB is home to a particularly vibrant neuroscience community, with particular strengths in neurodegeneration, epigenetics, and neuronal plasticity. Principal Investigators at Southern Research maintain collaborations with numerous investigators at UAB and have the opportunity to serve as thesis mentors to UAB undergraduate and graduate students.
To be considered, applicants must: 1) possess a PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree with a research emphasis in neuroscience, neurobiology, neurology, neuropharmacology, or related disciplines; 2) have an active, externally funded research program; and 3) submit a curriculum vitae, a 1-2 page synopsis of prior research with external funding, and a two page description of future research goals.
This is an exciting opportunity to facilitate basic and translational research in neuroscience within a world-renowned and veteran institution for new drug discovery. The incumbent will function as a well-studied, collaborative leader who manages an extramurally-funded, academic-style laboratory within the Drug Discovery Division and can assist with developing the next generation therapies neurodegeneration. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of competitive funding and research publications and is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of the Division.

Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Neuropharmacology, Molecular Imaging, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related discipline.
Research emphasis in neurology, neuroscience, neurobiology, neuropharmacology, aging, biomedical sciences or related disciplines
3-5+ years of independent research experience.
Must have an externally funded research program.
Excellent written & oral communications skills.
Ability to write successful grant proposals.
Track record obtaining significant external research funding.
Must be recognized as a scientific/technical specialist in a field of research.
Strong project management skills.
