The Neuroscience Program in the College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University seeks candidates for a non-tenure-track assistant teaching professor position to begin the 2019-2020 academic year. This is a full-time 8.5-month faculty position. Responsibilities include teaching of undergraduate courses, coordination of neuroscience graduate courses, participation in undergraduate academic advising, and service on neuroscience program committees.
The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience group offers an integrated learning major in Neuroscience to undergraduates as well as neuroscience graduate concentration. The Neuroscience Program consists of 35 faculty members from departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the David B. Falk College of Sports and Human Dynamics, and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Undergraduate neuroscience ILM students currently number 220. The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate Concentration Program currently has 17 students who are admitted into the department of a traditional discipline and then complete coursework interdisciplinary to neuroscience.
Master's degree in Neuroscience or a closely related field required. Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience preferred. Relevant prior teaching experience is required.
The candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students, as well as fostering a climate of inclusion. The program is interested in candidates who have developed effective teaching strategies for the educational advancement of students from groups underrepresented in higher education or in neuroscience. Likely undergraduate courses for instruction include, but are not limited to: the Biology and Psychology of Neuroscience, and Neuroscience Fundamentals for Communication Sciences Disorders. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to develop upper division neuroscience electives appropriate to her/his expertise and the needs of the Neuroscience Program. Service duties include coordination of course timings and other details across departments participating in the neuroscience graduate concentration as well as the undergraduate integrated learning major (ILM) in Neuroscience. This Assistant Professor of Teaching will serve as the primary advisor to half of the Neuroscience ILM undergraduate students and will be responsible for maintaining student files for the undergraduate program and the neuroscience graduate concentration, as appropriate.
