Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a highly utilized, comprehensive, student counseling service that assists students with a wide range of concerns, including academic success, life management, career and life planning, crisis management, and emotional and psychiatric illness. CAPS also has an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited pre-doctoral internship training program.

The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) supports the academic mission of the University by providing vision, leadership and strategic direction for a wide array of mental health programs, services and initiatives that enhance the well-being of students and the campus at large. Key responsibilities include:
•Provides administrative oversight, guidance and accountability for CAPS by defining the goals and objectives for the department and engaging in assessment of all student mental health services and activities. Oversees CAPS budget and resource allocation. •Oversees operations and services that support the mental health and well-being of students. Provides leadership for campus mental health initiatives and provides expertise regarding student mental health issues. •Serves on the management teams of the University Health Services and collaborates with other UHS managers to develop strategic and operational goals and objectives and in program planning and resource allocation. Makes recommendations and implements decisions on issues (operational and budget processes, staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning) that have department-wide impact. •Supervises CAPS Managers and keeps abreast of staff functioning, including the design, evaluation and implementation of mental health programs and services across campus. •Demonstrates national involvement and leadership in student counseling and mental health professional organizations, representing the Berkeley campus through publications, presentations and elected offices. •Participates in campus committees relevant to campus wellness and mental health initiatives, such as the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Student Mental Health, CAPS Student Mental Health Advisory Committee and provides leadership for the campus on current and emerging mental health issues. •Interprets, implements and monitors compliance with all local, state and federal regulations pertaining to mental health delivery systems. •Oversees development, documentation, implementation and assessment of department policies, procedures and protocols; ensures that appropriate credentialing licenses and certification of staff are current. •Other duties as assigned• 5 years managerial experience (healthcare setting highly preferred) •Expertise in providing psycho-diagnostic and psychotherapy services to patients. •Understanding commonly applied HR policies and procedures, actions, recommendations, and decisions. •Thorough knowledge of fiscal/budget processes. •Excellent written and verbal communication skills. •Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, competence in working with culturally and ethnically diverse populations, and awareness of how issues of difference, power and privilege manifest in higher education environments. •Excellent decision-making and organizational leadership skills and the ability to establish priorities, goals and objectives for the unit. •Excellent skills associated with program management and evaluation. •Strong organizational skills to organize functions, ensure smooth processes and adherence to regulatory requirements. •Highly effective interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a highly collaborative manner and strong problem-solving abilities. •Strong ability to lead and foster professional development of staff members. •Knowledge of electronic/medical records systems.
Education/Training: •Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology, MD with specialty in psychiatry or Masters in social work with a current, valid license in California. Employment is contingent on successful completion of: Background Check, Acceptable Medical Evaluation that includes infectious disease surveillance and proof of current required vaccinations or immunity levels, and successful credentials verification (if applicable).
